It looks pretty ugly in my opinion. It's also overpriced at $2000. You could build the same system with the same specs but for cheaper and with more freedom. That case size and overall look is not easy on the eyes. It is aesthetically nothing but a box.

I'm not confident that Intel will keep the same form factor. Watching what it does in the past, the case may probably still usable for the next gen, but definitely will become junk when the next, next gen comes out.

I'd rather see Intel do an inversed board on the CPU side, for cooling reasons; essentially if you have slots 1 to 4, make the PCIe connectors be on slots 2 and 3, so that CPU cooling is taking up slot 1 and most of 2, and GPU cooling is taking up slot 4 and most of 3, thus the CPU side has more cooling potential, and so that there's no chance of that little fan being choked by GPU placement, or sucking in warm air from the backside of the GPU. It'd also make it less likely for someone to reverse the two cards during assembly. I also want to see this compute module scheme be expanded to desktop components. CPU and memory board, make the backplane chipset and I/O, and maybe have a supplementary I/O card that sits between the CPU and GPU, if you couldn't squeeze enough of the external I/O into what the backplane board can hold. Bit wider wouldn't be a bad idea, external I/O at the back, internal I/O at the front, chipset/NVMe/PCIe/M.2 for wifi on the top side, then fit 4 NVMe slots on the bottom side, combined with desktop grade parts, you'd have a fairly compact PC with almost no compromises, and any compromises could be fixed with that supplemental PCIe card that sits between the CPU card and GPU card. And if it uses the inversed CPU card, as I suggested before, cooling would also have no compromise, especially with an AIO. CPU board in this style should also have the space capacity for four full DIMMs, especially if a full length board is used rather than a shorty board, as all the third party cases for this NUC are allowing for. I'd be fine with moblie-grade components in a system like this if Intel would stop restricting their moblie CPUs to 16 PCIe lanes. Intel is behind the curve on this, especially now that we have NVMe taking up lanes, you can no longer have a mobile CPU support x8 on GPU and have multiple NVMe drives, along with other required components. It's ridiculous that Intel still restricts lane count. Plus what happens when top tier GPUs eventually break the x8 threshold when Intel isn't adopting the newest PCIe spec fast enough? Honestly, with 12VO power supplies and delivery coming, Nvidia's new 12 pin connector that apparently has a power throughput of 4x 8 pin connectors, and with this new compute module layout, we could see a shrink in PCs. 12VO provides for smaller PSUs and less overall wire bulk, Nvidia's new connector reduces wire and connector bulk for equivalent power (12 pin vs 4x8 pin, 6 pin wide vs 16 pin plus gaps wide, etc.), and we could very easily see other power connectors follow suit, like a CPU's 2x4 pin connector condensed into a single 6 pin connector, similar to what Nvidia is doing with their 12 pin. Plus we've already seen other size reductions, like USB 3.0 to 3.1, where the 3.1 connector takes up nearly half of 3.0's footprint, or the move from 2.5" storage to NVMe, which made drives smaller and removed the need for excessive cabling and excessively large cable connectors. Remember when the industry moved from bulky IDE cables to the much smaller SATA cable, when hard drives shrunk from 3.5" to 2.5", or when we eventually got past the need for 5.25" bays? Those where fairly large volumetric footprint shrinks, 12VO, better power connectors, and more efficient component layouts are just the next move in increasing volumetric footprint efficiency. This kind of space efficiency is going to be close to on-par with servers, only thing that won't be so space efficient is cooling, even with water cooling loops; and internal PSUs will add some bulk, but external power bricks could very well become more popular with 12VO.
