What's hilarious is that Tomb Raider didnt even need an external GPU to run the game smoothly on Rosetta and the M1 SoC. I cant believe such an old game, requiring a powerful, large graphics card on PC, to run so smoothly on just an Apple CPU which doesnt even need an external GPU.

Anyone that doesnt think this will be industry changing really doesn't understand how big a deal it is. If Apples processors bring even a small increase of the suggested battery life and the performance once all apps and the OS are 100% ARM based its going to make their competitors numbers look generations behind. I don't think Microsoft is well aware what is coming hence why they released the Surface Pro X so soon and well before it was ready for sale. The slow adoption of it is purely based on the poor reviews it had, great hardware let down by software support. Apple won't make that mistake, this isn't their first major change of platform hardware and the switch to Intel was pretty smooth considering all the moving parts.

I’m legitimately curious and a dumb dumb when to comes to hardware. But is it possible instead of a discrete graphics card and since they’re so small, can Apple place 2 A(insert number) chips in a computer instead of a single cpu? Somewhat of a dual processor. One for normal tasks and one to add the additional strength needed for more graphics or processor intensive tasks?

I think the Apple silicon should be replaceable because when basically in intel we could change the core to make it more efficient to work like, and intel MAC’s have got more software updates so if the Apple silicon is used we could get approximately around 5 years of updates and next we have to buy a new Mac again for every 5 years. So, to deduce this problem if the silicon can be replaced further with upgraded silicon like moving on from A14 to A15 or A16 this could make them strong u no need to worry. It could lead to high benchmarks and the company could raise standards and power. If those cannot be replaceable we’re gonna definitely suffer every year. If possible the motherboard should support arround 4 silicon replacements/upgrades. It’s like changing from intel core i9 to i10.

Replaceable Apple processor? That would be tremendously bad idea. Apple want to ensure the quality and longevity of their products. In many cases people screw things up when they fix their stuff. Even if it's just a processor replacement. They just don't want to be bothered with thousands of people who knocks on Apple's door saying "my mac is broken" just to figure out that it was "fixed" by a third party.

Yeah when they made the first 1ghz and 64bit Phone processor it was a game changer because they could push what they wanted out of a chip. Its only going to get better once they have full control of their desktop CPU+GPU. Just imagine the monumental 9 X improvement in graphic performance just like we saw in the iPad.

I think the less tech users currently have 'affinity' - in line with their demands for the products from Intel system - with flexibility and options to upgrade and customize their PC/laptop/tablets etc, the better the chance Apple will take over CPU manufacturers. While tech geeks think that components upgradeability and customization flexibility is like sacred, going into the future most, if not all users will be interested on application based experience or software oriented experience. People will demand less with discrete graphics or upgradeable ram or PSU brands, casing styles, etc. The future geek techies will have 'affinity' on software and applications design and customization. I've been a tech geek for almost 40 years, since I first use a 386 computers with BASIC and some games to play on it. Later on moving to a better hardware with different components for options to build the next rig with MS Dos software and primitive productivity programs and games. Over the following decades, I and everyone else who liked tinkering computers were used to and at the same time liked the flexibility and freedom to play with the different components of the system as they were very much hardware bound system. Each of those components have many companies that were innovative making those hardwares, except for one, the CPU. Intel has been the only monopoly in this component space. As the actual computer system become more advanced and that advancement shifted the user experience from hardware dependent to software complexity development, Intel hasn't been catching up the evolution of this industry trend. They're like a happy rich fat cat that's oblivious with the development. Anyways, now, I think, Apple will be the new Intel in the consumer market for the major hardware component maker for the advanced mobile SOC systems and their related products. Intel will still play a major role in the industrial computer infrastructure system, but the consumer market technology, the technology for the masses will not be using Intel and to some extent, AMD chips anymore in their devices.

It’s weird to compare the chip cost production directly like that. Intel sells you a chip that includes the cost of design and production. If Apple makes the chip, you can’t just look at production cost, but also the cost of the hardware teams involved. That said, amortized over the devices they’ll be used in and accounting for overlap between chips/devices, agreed it’ll likely be somewhat cheaper. I just don’t think it’ll be so much cheaper that they pass on that cost to consumers or, if they did, that it’ll be significant. Maybe 33% cheaper on the chip, so the consumer saves $100..? Unnoticeable on an iMac. That’s not the point of this transition at all.

I rather stick with x86 where I know I can have the power when needed. ARM (RISC) is more suitable for long battery life, general web browsing, text processing. I would not be fooled. Apple will always have two types of processors otherwise, people will complain when they need teh power to do hard core processing. I do my H.265 video compressions using only the cpu and not gpu because the files are significantly smaller! Most people don't know the difference between RISC vs. CISC so Apple (as usual) get people to fork out the money. Note that Ryzen 4000 series laptops have extremely long battery life, so why would it matter? When Intel goes to TSMC to produce their cpu just as AMD does, these battery life / power saving will be a moot point. I use my PC because I can run softwares I have that are really old.. you can't do this with apple products. Sure there will be Rosetta2, but watch Apple will take that away just like they did with Rosetta 1. Apple just keep on switching techs to reap in more profits. This is all about reaping profits. My first generation i3 can hook up to a 4k monitor, upgraded ram and ssd. Laptop was less than $300; got a few for entire family under $1000. Go away Apple.

We dont understand your point of view.....The reason Apple is moving away from intel is that Intel has a monopoly and was not gooing to reduce their licensing costs to Apple. The cost of production of an x86 chip is at the moment less than an ARM chip.It is understood that apple took shares in the manufacturng company producing Apple chips and aims to leverage that company.The truth is that most users dont want ARM chips as most of the worlds software is written on x86 representing high investor enguagement with x86. Apple needs to design a chip which does not have in secure weak firmare and yet runs x86 software natively. Apple has made mistakes in the past..we hope Apple has not made another one....

This argument is nice but look at the prices of iPad pro's, uses these ARM chips, are the most expensive tablets out there. I would invest in Apple before these come out, because Apple IS NOT going to past the cost saving to the consumer. I think that the move is a good one but we the consumer are not going to get cheaper products.

I’m getting a MBP16 now, but is it worthy to upgrade to a higher CPU? Or 32GB ram? Or 8GB GPU? It will mainly be used for Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro, and I’m considering the upgrade mainly for future need since you can’t upgrade it yourself later on. But if you can only use it for ~5 years considering the possibility of Apple stopping the support for intel based machines after they transit to Apple silicon, do these upgrades make no sense any more?

Be correct. Apple has reduced prices of products in the past 15 years. It is not impossible for Apple to offer lower prices and still make profit.

I'm not saying that I have the best computer, but I have a 2017 iMac i5 that comes nowhere near my 300 dollar iPad in terms of graphical performance. The areas it will really matter, like in the Mac Pro, will still have the capability to have dedicated graphics cards. Any improvement in graphics will be welcome to the Mac lineup, as the intel chips are absolutely awful at it.

Seems like a mistake. I think Apple will in the beginning have performance issues with their own hardware, a desktop level device is different than mobile devices. Thus they will sell souped up mobile devices to their fanbase.
